Why is web design important?

Web design is not just about “design” but also the success of your business. A well-crafted web design significantly impacts visitor experience, brand perception, credibility, and trust. Design goes beyond aesthetics, playing a crucial role in search engine rankings and attracting potential customers. The design, therefore, directly impacts the rankings you get in search engines and the results you see. This, in turn, results in more people becoming customers, more sales or whatever other results you may need.

Good web design considers user habits and expectations, visual hierarchy and scanning patterns, and emotional response.

“On the web, people don’t read every word on a page; instead, they scan. They naturally attempt to be efficient and put in the least possible work for achieving their goal. They have learned that scanning can deliver almost the same amount of information as reading, but with significantly less time and effort.”
Nielsen Norman Group

In short, Web Design is like the foundation of a house. If built correctly, everything else can stay on track.

What are the key elements of a good web design?

A good web design keeps the end-user in mind and works to convince them to take whatever action they wish.

Clean and Organised Layouts – Ensuring visitors can navigate your pages.

Clear and Intuitive Navigation – Consider user habits and common expectations and prevent confusion.

Embracing Responsive Design – Mobile-friendly web design to cater for a broad audience.

Fast Load Times – Under 2 to 3 seconds.

Visual Hierarchy and Scanning Patterns – Colour, contrast, typography and understanding how visitors scan your pages.

Emotional Response and Design – Creating connections with target users.

Consistent Design Elements – Fonts and colours to build trust and confidence.

Engaging and Relevant Content – Created for the intended visitors.

Clear Call to Action – Contact forms guiding users to the correct action.

Thorough Testing – Ensure the site functions seamlessly on relevant devices.

Accessibility – Ensuring your website can be used by everyone. Proper use of alt text for images and colour contrast.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) – Optimising your website for search engines so that people can easily find it.

What is the cost of web design?

Prices vary depending on your project’s scope and complexity.

A better question might be, what may other designers ignore that I pay close attention to? These include aspects that help you get the desired results, like keyword and competitor research, and factoring in aspects like Local SEO, Google EEAT guidelines and much more.

There are risks and shortcomings of DIY or cheap web design, including issues like a lack of SEO consideration and issues with functionality, aesthetics, and user experience.

It’s about understanding your unique needs and budget. I offer a flexible approach that ensures you get the website you need, no more, no less. Complexity, features, size, and maintenance requirements will impact your costs.

How much do freelancers charge for web design?
A simple website might cost £100-£3,000.

How much does a web design agency cost?
A similar design from an agency can range from £2,000-£10,000+

To give you an idea of my prices, look at My Example Web Design Costs.

My main difference from a Stroud agency or web design company is my price flexibility, focus on SEO results, and personal attention.

How long does it take to design a website?

For a standard 5-page business website, design and development will typically take 20+ hours of work. It would be best to assume the design will be delivered in a month from start (initial contact) to finish (launch).

Timelines vary and depend on client expectations, project complexity, and client responsiveness. I believe in setting realistic timescales and will endeavour to set clear expectations for your project.

With my planning and proactive approach, I ensure the web design process is as smooth and efficient as possible. I don’t just design websites; I create solutions that work for you and your business.

GeneratePress helps me streamline WordPress design, allowing me to design bespoke, fast, mobile-friendly websites quickly.

For example, I helped my existing client set up the Premier Mezzanines Website with GeneratePress with SEO and content in place within a month. Within their first month, they started receiving leads and converting them into business.

I also favour hosting like Siteground, which strongly emphasises site speed and security, such as built-in 2-factor authentication.

What is responsive (mobile-friendly) web design?

Simply put a responsive web design changes to work on different screen sizes and devices. You may have heard the phrase “mobile-friendly.” Responsive websites can also be considered mobile-friendly.

A mobile-friendly website is excellent for your visitors, no matter what device they use. Google particularly rewards mobile-friendly sites, and they typically enjoy better rankings.

Why is responsive web design important?
“Mobile Optimization Dominates Among 62% of Top-Ranking Websites… …and… …Websites With Responsive Design Achieve 11% Higher Conversion Rates”

On mobile devices is load time more important?
“53% of visits are abandoned if a mobile site takes longer than 3 seconds to load.”

Do you offer website maintenance services?

Yes; Regular website maintenance ensures the site remains secure, up-to-date, and optimised for performance (e.g., plugin updates, security checks, backups). Maintenance contributes to a positive user experience and improved SEO performance.

Does it cost money to keep a website running?
Yes, Even after the initial build, ongoing costs exist to keep a website functioning as you wish. Most typically, these costs include:

Domain Name Renewal: I like Namecheap as a provider. At the time of writing, the costs for a .com domain name start at £10.95 per annum.

Web Hosting: I like Siteground, which charges £13.99/mo at the time of writing.

Website Maintenance: Website maintenance costs, including updates, security checks, backups, etc, typically range from £50.

How to find a web designer near you?

STEP 1. First, determine your approximate budget to filter through your available options quickly.

STEP 2. Next, consider your needs to ensure you focus on the right designer. Consider factors like website size, desired functionalities (e.g., e-commerce), and the level of ongoing maintenance required.

STEP 3. Look for web designers in your area who match your budget and needs. Try a Google search like “Web Designer Near Stroud” and note down sites of interest.

STEP 4. Shorten your list of designers using RankMath SEO Analyzer. Use this tool to determine if each designer’s home page is lacking in any way.

STEP 5. Finally, approach the designers on your list.

Where do I work?
I typically serve clients not only in Stroud but also in surrounding areas, including:

Stroud District: Including the Stanleys, Dursley, Nailsworth and Stonehouse.

Gloucestershire: This includes towns such as Yate, Cirencester, Dursley, and Thornbury.

Gloucester, Cheltenham, and Bristol: I am within commutable distance of major cities like Bristol, Gloucester, and Cheltenham, and I have many clients in Bristol.

I keep travelling to a minimum as I want to minimise my impact on the environment. If you are outside the Stroud District or unable to meet in person, I am available on Zoom and Google Meet.
